What Goes Wrong: Common Ignition Cylinder Problems We Repair
The ignition cylinder is a precision mechanical component that endures thousands of rotations over a vehicle's lifetime. The most frequent failure we see is a worn cylinder where the internal wafers — small spring-loaded pins that read your key's cuts — have flattened out from years of use. When wafers wear down, the key may feel loose, require jiggling, or simply stop turning the cylinder altogether. We also respond frequently to broken-key extractions, where a key has snapped inside the cylinder and drivers assume the entire ignition assembly is ruined. In many of those cases, a skilled extraction saves the existing cylinder and gets the vehicle running without a full replacement.
Stuck ignitions are another common call, and the cause is not always the cylinder itself. A locked steering column, a worn key that no longer aligns the cylinder properly, or debris inside the housing can all mimic a broken ignition. Our technicians diagnose the true root cause before recommending any repair, which means you never pay for a full replacement when a targeted repair is all that is needed. We carry an inventory of replacement cylinders and ignition switch components for a wide range of makes and models, so in most cases we complete the job roadside without ordering parts.
